<p>I am also looking at just how recommended this is for your best man friend. There are ingredients in this supplement that should have you and your man friend asking some serious questions. Some of the ingredients may be safe if they come from the right place i.e. L-arginine. <span id="more-931"></span>If the manufacturer does not specifically say that it&#8217;s from the right place you can bet that it isn&#8217;t and that means it is a risk. Several others have potential risky side effects. Remember that damage that is done does not always show itself immediately; but may come years down the road as a weakened system breaks down. I really question whether these short term shortcuts are worth it.   <br />
L-arginine: A planned study of two years, done by Dr. Steven Schulman, M.D. of John Hopkins Medical Institution was stopped abruptly (6 months into the study) due to deaths in the L-arginine group (6 deaths in 6 months) with none in the control group. While these were patients with heart conditions the safety of using L-arginine by all should be considered a concern.<br />
Dr. Ann de Wees Allen responding to an interview request by Bloomberg News indicated that there have been thousands of published clinical trials with L-arginine that have not resulted in deaths. Dr. Allen is a leading authority on L-arginine, having been involved in research with L-arginine since 1983 in over 250 000 human subjects.<br />
Through Dr, Allen&#8217;s research a safe form of L-arginine has been developed. This form is called L-arginine M2.  The safety of L-arginine comes from the carrier called a Blind Amino Acid that it is attached to. With out this carrier the safety of using L-arginine is highly questionable.<br />
Buyer Beware: Know the L-Arginine that is in the supplement you are using. Remember that patent pending does not mean that it has been accepted.<br />
L-glutamine: L-glutamine is one of the most abundant naturally occurring nonessential amino acids in the human body. It freely circulates through the body in the blood and is stored in skeletal muscles. It generally becomes an essential amino acid only in the case of illness or injury.<br />
Dietary sources of L-glutamine include beef, chicken, fish, eggs, milk, dairy products, wheat, cabbage, beets, beans, spinach, and parsley. Small amounts of free L-glutamine are also found in vegetable juices and fermented foods, such as miso.<br />
While L-glutamine does have a role in protein synthesis it is questionable as to whether or not supplementation beyond a good well balanced diet is really necessary.<br />
Creatine Ethyl Ester: Creatine is synthesized naturally from amino acids mainly in the liver and kidneys. It is widely used in supplement form by athletes though studies are rather inconclusive as to the effectiveness of supplementation. Research by the old Soviet Union indicated that there may be short term performances benefit in brief, high performance activities such as sprinting.  In 2000 distribution by colleges to their athletes was banned by the NCAA. <br />
Excess creatine is expelled in urine. This may have some influence in resulting kidney problems from supplementing, particularly overdosing. There are enough potential side effects from creatine supplement usage that anyone involved in it should be monitored by a physician.<br />
Tribulus Terrestris: Tribulus Terrestris  is an extract from a plant of similar name of the Zygophyllaceae family. It is purported to raise sex drive and increase power and stamina. Controlled studies of this extract have failed to consistently live up to the claims. The reasons why your buddy may be showing results for this are the same reason that studies done with a control group and with considerably large numbers of people. Sometimes a person has positive results because he believes he should; sometimes for some other things he is doing, etc.</p>
<p>Yohimbine: Yohimbine is an extract from the bark of the African yohimbine tree. It is sometimes prescribed by doctors for erectile dysfunction; especially when the dysfunction is psychologically based. It might be useful for someone who has been working with steroids.<br />
Synephrine: Synephrine was introduced as a replacement for ephedrine which was banned by the FDA. It tends to help:<br />
o Stimulate fat metabolism<br />
o Suppress the appetite<br />
o Create a sense of well-being<br />
o Increase energy, often providing a &#8216;rush&#8217; similar to caffeine<br />
o Increase caloric expenditure</p>
<p>Because its chemical structure is very similar to ephedrine one might expect many of the same side effects, some of which may be:<br />
o Rapid increases in blood pressure<br />
o Cardiac arrhythmias<br />
o Flushing of the skin<br />
o Sweating<br />
o Restlessness<br />
o Hostility or agitation<br />
o Respiratory problems<br />
o Dizziness<br />
o Headaches<br />
o Tremors<br />
o Extremely low blood sugar and blood sugar imbalances<br />
Synephrine acts on the body as a stimulant. Therefore if you have heart problems, high blood pressure or happen to be sensitive to caffeine you should be wary of this compound. The FDA has not banned this substance at the moment but is carefully watching present and ongoing research.<br />
Excerpt from Health Canada Bulletin:<br />
From Jan. 1, 1998, to Feb. 28, 2004, Health Canada received 16 reports in which products containing bitter orange or synephrine were suspected of being associated with cardiovascular ARs, including tachycardia, cardiac arrest, ventricular fibrillation, transient collapse and blackout. All cases were considered serious. One involved a suspect product containing bitter orange but no caffeine or Ephedra/ephedrine. In 7 cases the suspect product also contained caffeine, and in 8 cases the suspect product also contained both Ephedra/ephedrine and caffeine. Two of the 16 patients died, both of whom had taken products containing Ephedra/ephedrine and caffeine in addition to bitter orange. Evaluation of these reports is challenging because of many factors such as the lack of information on the ingested dose of synephrine, the contributory effects of other (multiple) ingredients such as Ephedra and caffeine, and the ambiguity of the reported information.</p>

<p>Sometimes these harmful effects are produced from our tendency to think that if 1 pill works well maybe 10 pills will work even better. Often these harmful effects are caused by one or more of the chemicals in the supplement. Our liver is a major filtration organ in our body. If it is over worked by taking too many of a good thing it may be damaged. If it is attacked by toxic chemicals it may be seriously damaged.</p>

<p>The question that got me on to this topic was from an individual asking about taking Hydroxycut products. It is important to know that as of May 2009 the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) put out warnings to consumers to immediately stop using Hydroxycut products. There have been several reports of serious health problems including jaundice and elevated liver enzymes (indicators of potential liver injury), liver damage requiring liver transplants, and death due to liver failure.  The FDA lists other health problem including seizures, cardiovascular disorders, and rhabdomyolysis, a type of muscle damage that can lead to other serious health problems including serious liver injuries.</p>
