Generally it would appear that weight loss begins to show some two to four weeks after treatment with metformin. This weight loss is due mainly to the fact that the metformin works to lower your blood sugar.

It is important to understand that metformin is not a weight loss drug. It is used to treat
type 2 diabetes. In this type of diabetes the insulin produced by the pancreas is unable to get sugar into the body’s cells where it can properly do its work. Most often the cause of this type of diabetes is due to following a poor diet high in sugar and refined foods and, of course, being over weight which is partly due to over consumption of highly refined carbohydrates.

This initial weight loss is usually short lived will slow down and even stop after a period of time if you are not getting into a proper diet and exercising. It may be said at this point that many people are able to control type 2 diabetes through proper diet and exercise. It is important that even if you are taking Metformin you will need to follow a specially planned diet and it is even more important that make exercising a regular part of your life.

The penalty for not following proper diet along with regular exercise may very well be that you develop diabetes 1 which will require insulin injections.
