  • The sixth super food on the list is green foods; the young plants of cereal grains such as barley grass and wheat grass. The very young plants are much like vegetables and unlike cereal grains. They are high in chlorophyll which, studies show, has positive effects on cholesterol, blood pressure, the immune system, and the fight against cancer.
  • Seventh in line are hot peppers which, whether sweet or hot belong to the capsicum genus. They all contain and derive their heat from capsaicinoids, more so in the very hot peppers such as chili peppers. As well as heat these capsaicinoids have very positive effects on the body in the way of being anti-inflammatory, analgesic, heart-healthy and cancer fighting. As if this was not enough chilies are very high in antioxidants and flavinoids and have more vitamin C than citrus fruits.
  • Nuts and seeds though coming in eighth are no less super foods, possessing the ability to significantly reduce your risk of cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. They are an ideal partner in attaining your goals of weight loss. Nuts and seeds are exceptionally filling and satisfying.  When hit upon by the in-between-meal hunger pangs a hand full of nuts (unsalted of course) will fulfill the need with the added benefit of helping to reduce signs of aging.

  • Sprouts, the ninth in line, are very nutritious and are available throughout the year. They provide you with vitamin C, and protein and, very importantly, enzymes. The sprout contains a great many nutrients that, because they must be served fresh, have not been lost as in the case of many of our fruits and vegetables that may have spent long periods in warehouses or trucks being hauled to you.
  • Yogurt and kefir are the last on the list. These are forms of fermented foods and, unless they have been pasteurized, they contain loads of probiotics, the bacteria that are not only healthy but absolutely necessary for maintaining the health of our bodies through maintaining the optimal health of our digestive systems. Yogurts in the past were produced and then pasteurized. This helped in that the body could more easily handle the milk but eliminated the most beneficial part; the microbes! Today, fortunately, the yogurts and kefir we buy are living foods containing millions of bacteria just waiting to assist in bringing optimal health our way.

This is the list of 10 super foods as presented by Dr. Perricone. It is not a complete list as most brightly colored fruits and vegetables contain health giving benefits for us so don’t stop your quest here.

These super foods have the ability to help us reach and maintain healthy lives, achieve weight loss and then maintain a healthy weight. They help in the prevention of and the fight against cancer. They help to cleanse our bodies and keep them operating optimally. BUT! They are foods and so moderation is necessary here as with any other food. Eat well! Be healthy! Achieve weight loss!
